Destination Sustainability Index

Assess and benchmark the sustainability of your tourism destination

Logo Sustainability Index - white long

A destination’s commitment to make the world more sustainable, peaceful and prosperous has a strong impact on its reputation, community and environment.

Our proprietary indicator, the Destination Sustainability Index, is based on the European Tourism Indicator System (ETIS), and has been tailor-made to measure and benchmark the environment, economy, society and governance across any destination around the globe.

From Climate Change to Overtourism

Both our proprietary data and third-party data, including satellite environmental monitoring data, contribute to the determination of the index. We utilized the European Tourism Indicator System (ETIS), developed by the European Commission, as a reference point: this is the best-known and most-cited methodology for measuring tourism sustainability at a destination level.

To date, the DSI measures the following fundamental aspects of tourism sustainability:

This aspect concerns the environmental sustainability of the destination, analysis of the presence of greenery and natural environments, pollution of the seas, and air quality.

The index includes data on the destination's level of socio-cultural well-being, particularly in relation to the protection and enhancement of cultural heritage, the presence of events focused on culture and traditional/local heritage, the people's satisfaction with the destination's urban green areas, the destination's level of Inclusion/Accessibility, the number of tourist accommodations accessible to people with disabilities, and satisfaction with public transportation.

We are able to measure the impact of tourist flows on the socio-economic scenario of the destination and the degree to which tourists are able to coexist with the local population.

The index provides an analysis of visitor satisfaction with their stay experience, taking into account all points of interest and services available in the destination, such as hotels, B&Bs, bars, restaurants, transportation, attractions, and entertainment venues. This data is crucial for evaluating how well the tourist destination was able to meet the visitors' needs while also preserving the environmental and social sustainability of the place.

How does the rating system work?

Each sustainable factor – economy, environment, society and governance, is composed of a variety of unique sub-indexes. For each destination, we report 6 valuations with scores between 0 and 100 followed by a textual judgment that facilitates reading below. Sub-indexes are also scored using the same rating system.

0 – 20: POOR
20 – 40: FAIR
40 – 60: GOOD
60 – 80: VERY GOOD
80 – 100: EXCELLENT

Our findings are provided as both an averaged score and a score of each factor.
The results are highlighted on detailed spider charts and heat maps that allow for seamless interpretation.
